Stages of Reproductive Aging Workshop: STRAW +10

Are you a female athlete in your 30s, curious about the Menopausal Transition (MT)? Or perhaps in your 40s, wondering about your Final Menstrual Period (FMP)? I've been captivated by the MT for years for two reasons: (1) many of my patients/athletes are in this phase, and I want to support them as best I can, and (2) my mother experienced her FMP at 57 😳, so I'm intrigued by my own trajectory and its impact on health and athleticism. Current average age of FMP is 51.5 years old. Enormous thanks to the researchers who collaborated in 2001 and 2010, providing us with a clearer view.

In 2001, the first STRAW (Stages of Reproductive Aging Workshop) brought together researchers to develop a common nomenclature and staging system based on current research on ovarian aging, aiming for continuity in information and better clinical understanding. However, the original system was limited to "healthy" women.

In 2010, with advancements in our understanding of ovarian aging and corresponding hormonal and clinical presentation, researchers reconvened. This time, they provided a more nuanced understanding applicable to most women, regardless of age, demographic, BMI, or lifestyle.

Is this staging system helpful to you?
